This third and highly anticipated release by Sound Reformation sees the band changing its sonic soundscape once again. Un Mundo en Soledad pays homage to the famed Colombian author, Gabriel García Márquez and what is his most acclaimed work, Cien Años de Soledad (100 Years of Solitude). The album features twelve tracks exploring various themes found in the novel and some very specific scenes as well. Sound Reformation is joined by world renowned percussionist Little Johnny Rivero and the narration is done by Alfonso Cayón.

A note from Darryl:

I read Cien Años de Soledad for the first time in high school and even back then I could tell this work by Gabriel García Márquez was a very special work of literature. The subtle layers of nuance escaped my juvenile understanding, but I was enamored with the world created by Márquez. I’ve read the book at least five times since then and every time I discover something new, appreciating the genius of Gabo (Gabriel García Márquez) even more.

Un Mundo en Soledad is my tribute to this opus magnum by Márquez. In many ways this story embraces the heart and soul of not only the Latin American world, but human nature in its totality. While it would be impossible to narrate every occurrence of the novel in sound, I have opted to highlight occurrences in a loose chronological sequence that I feel encapsulates the essence of the novel. It is my hope that, much like the novel, the listener will become immersed in this magical world where the extraordinary becomes the ordinary.

I’d like to first and foremost thank my friends and family for their unwavering support throughout the years. The encouragement I’ve received from each and everyone of you kept me going in the darkest of times. To my brothers, Zaccai, Luques, and Wayne: my deepest gratitude to you all for sticking by my side through thick and thin. We’ve been through the trenches together these past ten plus years and I am proud to say we’ve come a long way TOGETHER as a band. I look forward to what the future holds for us! Special thanks to Little Johnny Rivero for his friendship, artistry, and gracing us with this presence and his sense of “swing!” Many thanks to Willie Bruno for taking my concepts and translating them into such beautiful artistry. Big thanks to Alina Zúñiga Pardo, Alfonso Cayón and his family, and Gabriela Rengel-Rohdin for their help with the translations from English to Spanish, which was a very crucial element of this project. Also, a big thanks to the Lydia Liebman Promotions as well as the team at Truth Revolution, Recording Collective for helping guide this project to fruition. And to all the wonderful musicians, writers, artists, dancers, and artists who are not “artists”... all of you have helped shape me into the person I am today and I am eternally grateful to you all.

“Pictures at an African Exhibition” pays homage to Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky’s similarly-titled piano suite, “Pictures at an Exhibition” — each of the 13 tracks draws inspiration from corresponding works of art by David Emmanuel Noel. The overall theme of the album is one of unity: “I wanted to create a work that shows how we as a human family have more in common than our differences would lead us to believe.”
